Doctors Worldwide UK Training Course 2017

Doctors Worldwide UK held its two-day annual training course at the Wellcome Trust in London, in October. Running in its eleventh year, the course has been updated every year and has been expanded from the original one-day course held in Birmingham in 2006. Thirty-four participants, from a diverse range of healthcare backgrounds, attended this year’s course.

On Day 1, the lectures and group sessions were focused on Emergency Response and on Day 2, the focus shifted to long term, development work. Topics included Needs Assessment in Emergencies, Health System Strengthening, Teaching, and Maternal Health.

There was a strong emphasis on values – maintaining a high standard of behaviour and practice, reflecting and learning from your own and others’ experience and treating people with dignity and respect. Case examples were used to discuss ethical conflicts that can arise while doing this type of work.

It was a great opportunity to meet colleagues and other trainees with an interest in humanitarian work and there was plenty of time for networking and sharing thoughts on training, careers and relief work.

Doctors Worldwide will be running the course again in 2018, so keep an eye on the course page, sign up for the email list and follow us on Facebook, for updates about the Course date and venue.
