Water & Wheelchairs: Serving Communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Photo Gallery)

This November, donations from the UK through Doctors Worldwide provided vulnerable communities in Pakistan with water wells,  and US donations went towards wheelchairs for patients with life-limiting medical conditions.

Water is a key aspect of good health – for sanitation, crops, livestock, as well as drinking, and with access to this basic and yet life-saving resource enables this community in Pakistan to begin a healthier future. It’s a great example of the low-cost, high impact work that Doctors Worldwide does in order to have lasting changes, long after we’ve gone – these wells will be used by communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for years to come.

We were also donated a number of wheelchairs, which we distributed from our Primary Healthcare site in Ata Shisha, which was set up in 2005 when we responded to the Kashmir Earthquake, establishing tent clinics with fifty medical volunteers, one tonne of medicinal supplies and ambulance services for the local communities.

Funds were raised  in order to build a permanent health structure in Ata Shisha which now serves 20,000 patients a year, including an out-patient maternal health services unit which saw it’s first baby born in 2017.

We are deeply grateful for the support provided by our sister office, Doctors Worldwide USA. The patients pictured in this gallery will now have a degree of autonomy and freedom that they did not have access to before.

If you would like to support our work, you can donate here. It only costs as little as £1 to provide quality healthcare access for 2 people. If you would like to make a lasting impact, you can set up regular monthly giving, in any amount you choose, here.
